Underlying Meanings of Superstitions Essay Example for Free

Underlying Meanings of Superstitions EssaySuperstition is thought to be a belief that does not have clear scientific or reasonable evidence to support it. But some superstitions were taught from pargonnts to children orally for a long time. Many superstitions have underlying meanings that contain useful knowledge, so they may be worth telling. One famous Japanese superstition is related to lightning. The god of lightning likes humans navel, so when you hear thunder, hide your navel in case he steals it. No one, except some children, believes that literally. Then is it just a silly expression? No, its not. I think it is formed for a lazy child who sleeps with their stomach naked. When it thunders, it often starts to rain, and the temperature goes down, so such a child is likely to catch a cold. That is, this phrase teaches lazy children to sleep with their dress on in case they catch a cold.Another common superstition is When removing belly button lint, you will have a stomachach e. This teaches about the stomach. more or less studies show that the superstition is wrong, and the black grain is just dirt. It may be told so that children wont scratch their navel violently. There is little brawn or fat around navel and important organs such as the bowels are just next to thin skin. If a child scratched it violently, a little injury would occur, and various kinds of minor germs would enter their body through the injury. As a result, they would suffer from a stomachache. The superstition may be told to thwart these problems. Finally, the last superstition is a little dirty, but also worthwhile. Dont urinate to earthworm, or your reproductive organ will puff. I use to urinate on the street however, I never experienced that my manly symbol puffed. It is also superstition that contains underlying meanings. The purpose of this superstition may be to advise against urinating on the street, because it may cause infection of the various kinds of minor germs, or humans have to express gratitude to earthworm, which gives nutrition to fields. In conclusion, there are a lot of superstitions in the world, but it is wrong to judge them as silly expressions just because they dont have a clear scientific or reasonable basis. However, they often contain important underlying lessons. They are worthwhile to be taken over to next generation.

Euthanasia Argued with Utilitarianism Essay Example for Free

Euthanasia Argued with Utilitarianism EssayThe term euthanasia originated from the Greek word for good death. It is the act or practice of determination the life of a person either by lethal injection or the suspension of medical treatment. Because of this many view euthanasia as app arently bringing relief by alleviating pain and suffering (1). I strongly agree in legalizing euthanasia in our society, and I exit be applying the honest doctrine Utilitarianism to defend my case. Euthanasia minimizes the suffering that affects those involved. Euthanasia is already legal in Holland, Luxembourg and Belgium, and permitted in Switzerland if performed by a non-doctor. In the US, the State of Washington, Montana, and operating theatre fuck off already passed laws in support of euthanasia while a recent Gallop poll finds that the vast majority of Ameri dirty dogs continue to support right-to-die laws for terminally ill patients. The following benefits to legalizing euthanasia are p atients are observed from unwanted suffering, free up the nurses and doctors time for savable patients, vital organs can be surrenderd, allowing doctors to save the lives of separates, and health supervise cost would be reduced.Certain diseases are incurable and result in a slow agonizing death. What is the purpose to suffer unceasingly till the body gives out? Imagine what it would be like to spend six months, or more, vomiting, coughing, enduring pain spasms, and suffering psychologically as well. Would it not minimize suffering, for the patient and the family and friends involved, to give the patient the option to say when they had enough? Patients can die with dignity rather than have the illness reduce them to a shell of their agent selves, and lessen the suffering of their family and friends. I also believe the right to die should be a fundamental freedom of each person. nowhere in the constitution does it imply that the government has the right to keep a person from com mitting suicide. After all, if the patient and the family agree its what they want to do, whose business is it any focal point? Who else is it acquittance to hurt? In a country thats supposedly free, this should be a fundamental right.Furthermore, we face a critical shortage of medical staff in this country right now, especially nurses. Recent studies from the pass five year have confirmed the obvious, that understaffed hospitals make more mistakes and provide lesser note care. This when considered under the utilitarian doctrine is immoral because it contributes to the overall utility that maximizes the suffering, and the moral goal is to maximize the good overall. Things are only going to get worsened as the baby boom generation gets older and life spans increase. Being more productive with the nurses and doctors time, the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people can be achieve, because the quality of care will increase and many lives can be saved with the time that w as freed up. In addition to increasing the quality of care in hospitals, Vital organs can also be saved, allowing doctors to save the lives of others.Euthanasia allows physicians to preserve vital organs that can be donated to others, assuming the patients are organ donors. People in need of organ transplants have long waiting lists to look forward to for hearts, kidneys, livers, and other organs that are necessary to save the lives of people who can be saved. However, if certain diseases are allowed to run their full course, the organs may weaken or cease to function altogether. Once again, we have to put the needs of the living ahead of the needs of the dying. Finally, healthcare costs will be reduced, which will in turn lower insurance premiums. Consider the huge cost of keeping a dying patient alive for several months. You must pay for x-rays, lab tests, drugs, medical staff salaries, and so on The overall net worth is monstrously high. It is not unheard of for medical costs to equal $50,000-100,000 to keep some patients alive. We have to ask ourselves, is this the best way to spend our money when the patient himself would like to die? Wouldnt the money be better spent on the patients that can be saved? Also, consider the chuff on a dying patients net worth. Most people want to be able to leave their children and grandchildren with something when they die. Medical costs eat into that estate. As Medicare, and other government programs accelerate the US towards bankruptcy, anything that causes a decrease in total costs must be brought forward for consideration. In conclusion, Euthanasia minimizes the suffering that affects those involved, and should be universally legalized in the US. As I mentioned before patients can die with dignity rather than have the illness reduce them to a shell of their former selves, and lessen the suffering of their family and friends. We can free up the nurses and doctors time for savable patients , and euthanasia allows physici ans to preserve vital organs that can be donated to others. Healthcare costs will be reduced, which will in turn lower insurance premiums.

Climate Change

Climate ChangeHistorically, only natural factors were believed to have affected the earths mode. However, during the 18th Century, scientists began to proportion human activities to varietys in climatic patterns (U.S Environmental Protection Agency, 2010). Subsequently, much scientific evidence has linked the activities of human beings to the concentration of greenhouse gases being significantly increase in the atmosphere, thus contributing to climate reassign. Despite the evidence presented, many skeptics still believe that climate change is a naturally occurring heating and engine cooling system cycle of the earth and that the extent to which human activities have contributed to it are being exaggerated (Hudson, 2009). However, based on the scientific evidence presented and the effects that climate change has already had and is predicted to have on planet earth, my position is that climate change is a real and eminent danger which could unplayfully affect our welfare on planet earth. In its Declaration on Climate Change 2009, The Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) captured the essence of my viewpoint in proclaiming that climate change poses the most serious threat to our survival and viability and that it undermines our efforts to achieve sustainable developmental goals and threatens our in truth existence. The world has already started to experience the effects of climate change in mingled ways which affects all aspects of livelihood. Therefore, if serious efforts are not made to reverse the effects of climate change, planet earth is in serious trouble.Climate change has already affected and continues to threaten the survival of terrestrial beings. In order to ensure survival here on planet earth, human beings as salutary as animals have basic requirements, water and food being of paramount importance. agree to AOSIS (2009) water re etymons go forth be seriously compromised and food production leave alone be affected as a result of increased i nundations, erosion and salt water intrusion, which are all directly linked to climate change. Costello et al. (2009) flavor in their article entitled Managing the Health Effects of Climate Change, that as a result of the rising temperatures associated with climate change in tropical and subtropic areas, half of the worlds population could face severe food shortages. For example, as a result of ocean acidification and increased temperatures, many coral reefs will be killed off. This could elbow grease serious food shortages since coral reefs serve as nurseries for many fish, which approximately wizard billion people depend on as a source of protein (Black, 2009). An separate way in which climate change affects the survival of human beings is that it has also been linked to an increase in various wellness problems. Costello et al. (2009) also explicitly stated that climate change is the biggest global health threat of the 21st century. They also went on to say that the effects of climate change on health will affect most populations in the next decades and put the lives and halebeing of billions of people at increases risk. For example, the spread and transmission rates of malaria by mosquitoes are accelerated by increased temperatures. The hotter the climate the faster mosquitoes multiply (Costello et al., 2009). Thus, it can be seen that increases in food and water shortages as well as negative health effects are a direct consequence of climate change. Therefore, if human beings are unable to have adequate amounts of food, safe drinking water and importanttain good health, then survival will become very difficult.Climate change also affects the ability of countries to achieve sustainable harvest-feast and development. The United Nations (2004) in its Brundtland Commission Report defines sustainable development as the ability of the present generations to meet their current needs without compromising the ability of approaching generations to satisfy th eirs. In light of the fact that climate is drastically affecting the ability of human beings to continue to adequately sustain themselves without further destroying the planet, sustainability will be more difficult to achieve. Black (2009) addresses climate change as it relates to development in his BBC News article entitled Bank Urges Climate Action in a flash citing the point put forth by the World Development Report 2010 that development will get harder, not easier, with climate change. Development is one of the main ways in which governments are able to provide jobs and generate receiptss. The resources found on planet earth are responsible for providing jobs and government revenue which all contribute to development. Climate change poses a serious threat to natural resources on sea and land with the intensification of natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes. According to AOSIS (2009) tropical storms have become more frequent and stronger. As a result of this, tre mendous damage has been done to infrastructures such as international airports, homes hotels and alley networks, which in turn puts a serious strain on governments financial resources and in turn hinders sustainable growth and development. For example, in 2004 hurricane Ivan wreaked havoc on Grenada and has left hand the country still struggling to recover. As a result of the destruction of most of the nutmeg crops the government was forced to turn to tourism as the countrys main income earner which is proving to be very difficult since balancing conservation of already strained natural resources with economic development is a very difficult childbed (Kelly, 2008). Also, the continued effects of climate change such as water shortages which the island is currently experiencing directly affect sustainable growth and development efforts since water is not only required for human consumption but for construction and other purposes. The fact that climate change affects the ability of h uman beings to survive as well as their ability to preserve the planet for use by future generations extends to a more serious matter which is that it could potentially threaten our very existence. Already, rise in sea levels have threatened the disappearance of finished populations. This is clearly exemplified in Bangladesh where, according to Shukman (2009) salty water could reach so far upcountry that the cultivation of staples which are essential for human survival could become very difficult. Coupled with this the occurrence of cyclones has left thousands homeless, killed many more and has caused widespread destruction and flooding. The very existence of 20 million people is being threatened as a result of climate change. Moreover, entire islands have already disappeared in Maldives, Kiribati and other Pacific Islands (AOSIS, 2009). In November 2006, at the United Nations negations on climate change held in Nairobi the vice president of Kenya Moody Awori captured the essence of the seriousness of the climate change matter when he commenced the talks by stating that climate change is rapidly emerging as one of the most serious threats humanity will ever face. The evidence has shown and continues to show that he is absolutely right. Therefore, it can be concluded that the effects of climate change are a global crisis extending to the entire sphere of planet earth affecting the ability of human beings to survive, be sustainable and inevitably even exist. A plethora of events have taken attitude and continue to occur which underscores the urgency of the effects of climate change. The extreme weather patterns which are currently being experienced as compared to previous events can be emphasized using numerous examples from all over the world. What is most astonishing about this matter is that human beings contribute to its cause. It is quite ironic, that in our quest to cleanse and revolutionize the quality of our lives here on earth that we are the underl ying cause of the destruction of the very earth that is our source of survival. Therefore, it is definitely apparent that urgent steps need to be employed in order to combat the problems caused by climate change. Human beings need to make an extra effort to patch up the error of our ways since our ability to survive and continue to exist here on earth critically depends on it.ReferencesAlliance of Small island States (AOSIS). Theatre Of The Absurd And The Homecoming English Literature Essay

landing field Of The Absurd And The Homecoming English Literature EssayFirstly, to substantially answer the question above, it is indeed compulsory to present a definition of absurdist theatre by which to draw comparisons from, to successfully evaluate Harold Pinters The Homecoming as a spokesperson example. It should initially be brought to the attention of the reader that absurdist theatre in effect does not present a typical definition or strict rules or guidelines from which to conform, for example, a piece of campaign script to. However, there is an interpretation that has been around famously noted by Martin Esslin in his Theatre of the Absurd, from which he puts this term into some context of discretion, influenced from the French philosopher Albert Camus, in his Myth of Sisyphus, written in 1942. (Culik 2000). For example, Esslin in his Theatre of the Absurd comments on the use of the word Absurd describing its original meaning as out of concurrence in a musical contex t. (Wor past 2004 p 907 -10) However, he hones in on Camus use of the word, which is used in the transforming of absurdist theatre that has a in all contrasting notion behind it. For example, Ionesco defines this notion as, Absurd is that which is devoid of purpose Cut off from his religious, metaphysical, and transcendental roots, man is lost all his actions become senseless, absurd, useless. (Worthen 2004 p 907 -10) Thus, the most central theme to Absurdist Theatre is awareness of this lack of purpose in all we do and how this produces a state of metaphysical anguish. (Ray 2005)Furthermore, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, the Theatre of the Absurd the term essentially coined by Martin Esslin in his critical work, as mentioned above defines the understanding that The Theatre of the Absurd strives to express its sense of senselessness of the compassionate condition and the inadequacy of the rational approach by the open abandonment of rational devices and straggly t hought. (OED 2010) Esslin continues to comment, in his study of Theatre of the Absurd, on the disorientating quality of the contacts (Worthen 2004 p 907 -10) that are commonly grouped into the genre of absurd, and how so many established criticshave condemned the absurdist plays for their lack of plot, development, characterisation, suspense or plain common sense. (Worthen 2004 p 907 -10) Specifically Esslin uses Samuel Becketts wait for Godot as an example to demonstrate that those in society that are unsophisticated enough t o come to the theatre without any preconceived notions and ready-to-eat expectations (Worthen 2004 p 907 -10) about a performance were thus able to look past the nonsense or mystification (Worthen 2004 p 907 -10) of these types of plays and find meaning and understanding in them, rather than their seemingly impertinent and outrageous imposture (Worthen 2004 p 907 -10).In terms of language, the Theatre of the Absurd, tends towards a radical devaluation of la nguage (Worthen 2004 p 907 -10), in other words reducing the value of language that logically, plays are so heavily reliant on. However, this is not to say that language is completely disregarded, because in circumstance it is not, its function is more poignantly used to contradict the action of the character voicing the lines. In terms of its historical context, Theatre of the Absurd has emanated from the avant-garde movements in art from the period of the 1920s 30s, originating from Paris. Yet, probably more central to its rise was the traumatic horror experienced from World War II. Furthermore, around this time the starting time of the loss of religious significance and dependence in peoples lives highlighted the opposite of purpose and meaning to life, alongside the resonating realisation of the uncertainty of life. As a effect the Theatre of the Absurd aimed to present an anti- theatre, to reflect as the world was beginning to tear apart, with its morals, conventions and value s, so too must theatre evolve out of its traditionalism and become surreal, illogical, conflictless and plotless. (Culik 2000).On first appearances Pinters The Homecoming, seems to fit the theory of the Theatre of the Absurd. It initially presents the reader with an absurd setting, whereby the back wall has been removed. The format action is juxtaposed against the false language that seems to be discursive the character Max, seems to pass aimlessly between subject after subject. It almost satirises how language is the key to communication. However, the dialogue seems ridiculous with the stage action contradicting the words that are said by the characters. For example, Max says to Lenny Dont you talk to me like that. Im warning you (Worthen 2004 p. 764) the understanding of the language implies Max aggressive attitude and embodiment, to that extent the stage action suggest a complete juxtaposition (He sits in large arm chair) (Worthen 2004 p. 764).Furthermore, the absurd dialogue exchanged by the principle genius Max seems to be shocking and the ability to comprehend impossible, thus adhering to the illogical sense instilled in absurdist language. He talks about his wife in a negative and oppressive tone, it made me sick just to look at her rotten stinking face, she wasnt such a bad bitch. (Worthen 2004 p.764) Lennys reaction seems to be completely oblivious to his fathers statement about his fret. Instead of the words he hears, its as if he hears irritating noise being expelled from Maxs mouth and wants him to be quiet. To add to the giddiness of the two characters we are presented with Max talks about himself in a manner that is bizarre, your lousy filthy father (Worthen 2004 p.764). The expression of this senselessness and repetitive discursive trend doneout the whole play creates an incomprehensible illusion that understandably baffles its audiences and readers.More so, in terms of language, the play adheres to the illogical trend absurdist theatre expresses, through the representation of the characters Teddy and Ruth. They are married, yet Teddy is not fazed in the slightest as his brothers start to have sexual relations with his wife. For example, Lenny says to Joey in earlier of Teddy, You didnt get all the way and youve had her up there for two hours (Worthen 2004 p782). This ludicrous behaviour stimulates an even more baffling realisation for readers and audiences, as they begin to understand the senselessness of the human condition that Absurdist theatre seeks to express. Furthermore, the incomprehensible expression of language strengthens even more so towards the end of the play. This is where we see the family, excluding Teddy gravitate towards Teddys wife Ruth, wanting her to stay in the household. Their objective for her is to turn her into a whore. This may be an act to replace the previous matriarch of the family, Jessie, who was both a mother and a whore. Teddys distinct separation from the meaning of the dialog ue depicts the open abandonment of rational devices, as he decides that it is okay to leave his wife there. However, in rivalry to the statement above, it is easy to see that Pinters The dwelling housecoming does reflect the trends of Absurdist theatre, yet something more new and exciting is emerging that does not just restrict itself to this category/genre. For example, passim the play we can see the heavy mix of influence from the realist and absurdist genres that dominate the majority of the play. This juxtaposition reflected in the setting, exposes side by side everyday domesticity with a subtle undercurrent of animalistic violence (Gin 2008).Francis Grin, in his book Pinters Stage, A New Genre argues that if you read Pinters play without the already existent framework (Gin 2008) of realist and absurdist theatre, then you will discover the text for what it truly is, an entirely new kind of dramaturgy (Gin 2008). Gin continues to argue that Pinters play needs to be looked throu gh an mugwump framework (Gin 2008)to discover the unique Pinteresque style of theatre e (Gin 2008).In addition Gins unique insight into this genre, and more specifically Pinters The Homecoming, allows a more citywide understanding to be gained from the seemingly incomprehensible read. For example, Gin clearly sees that Pinter creates a rhythm and tempo (Gin 2008) which mimics the strange patterns of real life dialogue, but allowing the terrorto hit home as the spectator fills the Pinteresque pause with their own subjective imagination. (Gin 2008). It is true that the play is fragmented with what seems to be a burdenful amount of pauses. This in itself does not constitute the play being placed into an absurdist category, but more so into Pinters very own category. As (Bradshaw 2004) states, The characters speech, hesitations, and pauses reveal not only their own alienation and the difficulties they have in communicating but also the many layers of meaning that can be contained in e ven the most innocuous statements. (Bradshaw 2004)Theatre Critic Molly Flatt, also has an inspiring perspective on Pinters play that suggests there is much more to the play than just containing it to two genres of theatre form (absurdist/realist). She describes it as a dark, left(p) and recognizable portrait of 1970s masculinity (Flatt 2008) until another character Teddy the prodigal son (Flatt 2008) returns with his wife Ruth, whom disrupts the stage action from awkward to disconcertingly bizarre. (Flatt 2008) therefore this is reflective of the theatre of the absurd with its naturalistic setting and dialogue (Flatt 2008) infused with the undercurrent of dim, bleak domestic horror (Flatt 2008). However its surrealism allows us to capture what is great and wacky and wrong and impartial that we understand what is human. (Flatt 2008) As Pinter himself states that there are many justices that seek to challenge, recoil, reflect, ignore, tease each other and so on (Flatt 2008) yet we never truly hold truth in our hands for more than a moment. (Flatt 2008)In conclusion I think that it is clear Pinter is heavily influenced by the avant-garde and absurdist movements, yet his brilliance in making such weird and wonderful plays does not just lie in these genres, but in something that he has truly made unique and as Gin comments completely created an entirely new dramaturgy. Yes it is clear to see the influences of surrealism, realism and absurdist theatre in his work, especially in The Homecoming, but to what extent it is a representative example of Absurdist Theatre, would be to oversimplify Pinters work. Therefore, after studying the text it would be indecent not to accommodate the influence of absurdist theatre, but also not to acknowledge Pinters the homecoming is ambivalent in its plot, presentation of characterbut are also works of undeniable power and originality. (Bradshaw 2004).
